Depending on what type of label material you are printing on, there are three different ribbon materials to choose from. Each has different properties and is best used with certain label materials and/or applications.
Wax ($): Used for standard printing on paper and uncoated label material.
Wax/Resin ($$): Used for applications requiring excellent resistance to chemicals on paper and synthetic materials.
Resin ($$$): Provides the best durability of all ribbons and is also frequently used on labels needing to withstand chemicals and heat.

Resin ribbons . Resin ribbons are for use on non-paper, synthetic label stocks and are great for use in applications involving exposure to chemicals, textile or garment labels, automotive labels, flexible packaging labels and very sensitive medical applications.
Wax/Resin ribbons are ideal for both standard and weatherproof thermal transfer labels. This material combination is more durable than full wax providing more resistance to heavy handling, temperature changes and moisture. Wax/resin ribbons are great for barcode, shipping, prescription pharmaceutical, and shelf labels.
Wax ribbons are the most common type of thermal transfer ribbon and are great for printing on regular or uncoated label surfaces that are not kept in extreme conditions. While less durable then their resin counterparts, wax material is also less expensive. Wax ribbons are great for use on shipping, shelf, bin, retail and warehouse labels.
